(Camp Hill, Pa.) - The Center for Independent Living of Central Pennsylvania's (CILCP) Executive Director Theotis Braddy was presented with the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission's (PHRC) Disability Rights Advocacy Award during the PHRC's 50th Anniversary celebration in Harrisburg on April 24, 2006.

According to Homer Floyd, PHRC's executive director, Braddy and CILCP earned the award because of, "extraordinary leadership, commitment and dedication to the advancement of civil rights and equal opportunity."

"Theo Braddy and CILCP have done an outstanding job providing equal opportunity for people with disabilities. The work CILCP has done has been opening doors throughout the region," Floyd said.

PHRC celebrated their 50th Anniversary with events in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Harrisburg. The commission presented the Disability Rights Advocacy Award to an outstanding regional advocate during each of the celebrations. The award was presented to Braddy and CILCP in Harrisburg; Bruce McElrath, board chairman of Disability Rights Advocacy Group, Inc. in Philadelphia; and Lucy Spruill, director of attendant care for UCP Pittsburgh.

PHRC chose the winners from a long list of disability rights advocates, both groups and individuals, throughout the state.

"We are honored to receive this prestigious award from the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission," Braddy said. "In it's first 50 years, PHRC has taken enormous strides in removing barriers for people with disabilities. Without their help, organizations like the Center for Independent Living would not have had the same success."
