(Camp Hill, PA) - The Center for Independent
Living of Central Pennsylvania announced today that
Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell has appointed
Theotis Braddy, Executive Director, to the Governor's
Advisory Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.
Braddy will serve on the Council, which consists of 15
members representing various groups. At the age of 15 Braddy
became a person with a disability following a high school
football accident. He has advocated on behalf of people with
disabilities for more than 25 years.
"Physical fitness should be an important aspect of all
Pennsylvanian's lives, including people with disabilities,"
Braddy said. "Our goal is to promote the health of
Pennsylvanians through physical activity."
The mission of the Governor's Advisory Council on
Physical Fitness and Sports is to improve the quality of
life for all Pennsylvanians by promoting healthy lifestyles
through increased participation in physical activity and by
supporting the cooperative efforts of schools, communities,
businesses and health institutions.
"Braddy will make an excellent addition to the Council on
Physical Fitness which works on behalf of every person in
the Commonwealth who is interested in leading a healthier
and more physical lifestyle," Governor Rendell said. "His
expertise with working with persons with disabilities is
also a welcome addition to the Council."
The Council formed in 1976, and has developed as a result
of encouragement from the President's Council on Physical
Fitness and Sports, and concern about Pennsylvanians'
fitness level and lifestyles in an increasingly
technological age.
The Council serves as a promotion and advocacy group
composed of 15 volunteers appointed by the Governor,
representing various sectors, including but not limited to
business and labor, amateur and professional sports,
education, local and state governments, other state
agencies, persons with special needs and the general public.
Braddy was hired in 1988 to establish and administer the
CILCP. As Executive Director, Mr. Braddy has created an
independent living center that has become a strong and
growing voice for persons with disabilities. Braddy serves
on a number of boards and committees. He was appointed by
the Governor in 1998 to serve as a Commissioner for the
Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission.
Braddy has a Masters degree in Social Work from Temple
University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work
from Edinboro University.
The Center for Independent Living of Central Pennsylvania
is a nonprofit, nonresidential organization established for
and by people with disabilities and serves Cumberland,
Dauphin, Perry, Mifflin, and Juniata counties. CILCP's
vision is to empower people with disabilities to fully
participate in all aspects of society. For more information
