(Camp Hill, PA) - Accessible Communities
Today (ACT) of Juniata and Mifflin Counties recently held
its first open meeting to discuss concerns and issues facing
people with disabilities in the area. Held at the Mifflin
County Library, residents from both Juniata and Mifflin
counties attended.
ACT, the Center for Independent Living of Central
Pennsylvania's (CILCP) grassroots advocacy group, selects
specific areas and helps businesses in that area comply to
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations. It is
ACT's goal to assist these communities and show surrounding
communities how important it is to meet ADA regulations.
"Our goal is to connect people with disabilities with
local officials and have them discuss ways to improve the
community," said Pam Auer, CILCP's community organizer. "We
would like to open the lines of communication and have more
people involved."
According to Ms. Auer, residents from the region
expressed ideas and concerns regarding conditions for people
with disabilities. "People from both counties attended and
discussed ways to educate their communities on barrier
removal," she said. "The next step is getting community
leaders involved in ACT."
The Mifflin/Juniata ACT is CILCP's fourth group of its
kind, with others in Shippensburg, Carlisle and the greater
Harrisburg area. These groups have taken significant strides
in achieving success of varying sizes. Auer and the
Harrisburg ACT have been advising the Giant Center on ways
to make the new sport and entertainment facility more
accessible to people with disabilities. The Shippensburg ACT
has worked on improving crosswalks throughout the town.
The next meeting for the Mifflin/Juniata ACT is scheduled
for August 13 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Mifflin
County Library. For more information on the meeting or ACT

The Center for Independent Living of Central Pennsylvania

and by people with disabilities and serves Cumberland,
Dauphin, Perry, Mifflin and Juniata counties. CILCP's vision

in all aspects of society. For more information on the CILCP
