(Camp Hill, Pa.) - The Center for Independent
Living of Central Pennsylvania (CILCP) and the
Cumberland/Perry Local Housing Options Team (LHOT) will hold
a housing options seminar on Wednesday, September 20, 2006
from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Otterbein United Methodist
Church in Carlisle, Pa.
The seminar is intended for service providers and
organizations, local government officials and consumers
interested in housing issues. During the seminar, CILCP as
well as other LHOT team members will provide information on
housing issues and services, including: support services, an
apartment locator website; plenary session;
emergency/accessible shelters; funding sources; privacy
issues; housing modifications; and aging and disability
resources.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2002 18.1 percent
of the population had some level of disability. Of the 51.2
million people with a disability, 11.8 million used a
wheelchair or other ambulatory aid such as a cane, crutches
or walker, which required them to need accessible housing.
"This is the second annual housing seminar sponsored by
the Cumberland/Perry Local Housing Option team and it is an
excellent opportunity for consumers and housing advocates to
obtain the latest information related to housing. Ms. Diana
Myers, a housing leader will discuss best practices and what
other communities are doing to improve the availability of
housing. The number of registered attendees has more than
doubled from last year. So, we know there is a need in the
community for these kinds of opportunities to get the latest
information; network and plan for the future," Ann Neimer,
director of the Independent Living Program for the Center
for Independent Living of Central Pa. said.
CILCP participates in the LHOT project, along with a
group of service providers, housing representatives,
builders and realtors. LHOT was formed to help create more
housing options for people with disabilities in Central
Pennsylvania. The LHOT project provides information
regarding housing options, Section 8, public housing, home
ownership and funding for housing.
The Center for Independent Living of Central Pennsylvania
is a nonprofit, nonresidential organization established for
and by people with disabilities and serves Cumberland,
Dauphin, Perry, Mifflin and Juniata counties. CILCP's vision
is to empower people with disabilities to fully participate
