THE CENTER FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING OF CENTRAL PA
HIRES NEW COMMUNITY ORGANIZER
(Camp Hill, Pa.) - The Center for Independent
Living of Central PA (CILCP) welcomes Amy Selders as the new
community organizer for the organization. CILCP is a
nonprofit, nonresidential organization serving persons with
disabilities, as well as their family members, community
service providers, government agencies and private
businesses.
As the community organizer, Selders will coordinate
activities in the community to inform consumers and the
general public of disability related state and local issues.
Her responsibilities also include developing disability
awareness trainings, assuring all communication pieces are
in accessible format, and participating in statewide
training and advocacy efforts.
"CILCP is very excited to have Amy as part of the team.
Her excitement and enthusiasm are contagious and she brings
a vast amount of knowledge about the independent living
movement," Janetta Green, director of operations said.
An active participant in the disability movement for more
than fifteen years, Selders has spent the last three years
in Chicago training youth with disabilities in areas such as
leadership, community organizing and disability pride. In
addition, she developed a youth peer mentoring training
program and the Disability Awareness Curriculum for the
Chicago Public Schools. Selders wrote the first Youth
Leadership Training Guide, which was distributed to more
than 500 Centers for Independent Living. Prior to joining
CILCP, Selders was the community organizer for the Three
Rivers Center for Independent Living and worked for the PA
Statewide Independent Living Council as the Statewide Action
Team (SWAT) program manager.
Selders graduated from St. Francis Academy and attended
the University of Pittsburgh. She and her husband Gil
relocated back to Amy's home state of Pennsylvania, after
residing in Chicago, Illinois for the last three years. In
her free time, Amy creates elaborate quilts that portray
images of disability history and culture. Selder's
"Disability Flag" quilt was solicited by the Smithsonian
Museum of American History, and more than 30 of her quilt
squares and descriptions of their historical significance
can be found on her website: www.amysthreads.com.
