A volunteer network of persons with disabilities designed to provide emotional support and to promote personal growth for individuals with similar disabilities.
What is Peer Helper Services? A self-help
support service provided to individuals with disabilities by individuals
with similar disabilities. Peer Helper Services involve helping
others to manage, remove, or cope with barriers they encounter.
Who are Peer Helpers? Peer Helpers
are not professional counselors. They are individuals with disabilities
who have gone through a volunteer training program through the CILCP.
How does it work? Once you have requested
Peer Helper Services a peer helper will contact you to discuss your
goals. Together you will develop a plan to reach those goals. Confidentiality
is maintained at all times in this process. You and the peer helper
decide how often you meet. Peer services can be provided person-to-person
or over the phone.
How can I become a Peer Helper? The
Center for Independent Living of Central PA offers peer helper training
to anyone who is interested. It is a 6-week training program, 2
hours per week.
