The PA Transportation Alliance (PTA)

Got Milk? Need Transportation? The PA Transportation Alliance (PTA) was formed to bring together all people with disabilities and their allies in a unified, statewide organized effort to ensure that accessible, affordable transportation is available to all PA citizens with disabilities. Individuals and organizations are invited to join the Alliance and work to make this goal a reality. The PTA is funded by the Pennsylvania Developmental Disabilities Council (PADDC). The Alliance grew directly out of activities among people with disabilities in many areas of the state. During the spring and early summer of 1995 regional Roundtable's on Transportation for People with Disabilities were held in five areas of the state. In September 1995 more than 200 people with disabilities from all across the state rallied in Harrisburg for Freedom Ride '95 organized by the PA Coalition of Citizens with Disabilities. Eighty people testified at the five-hour hearing about the need for better transportation in rural PA. Two local advocacy groups, the Greene Light Coalition with the support of the Tri-County Partnership for Independent Living CIL and Life and Independence Today CIL, each held regional transportation symposiums. Several new local transportation advocacy groups were formed and established groups stepped up their transportation advocacy efforts. Then, in May 1996, more than 130 people with disabilities and their allies from throughout the state met in Harrisburg for a two day Statewide Summit Meeting on Rural Transportation. Summit participants decided that a unified, powerful, statewide voice on transportation among all Pennsylvanians with disabilities was needed and voted unanimously to create the PA Transportation Alliance. An Alliance Steering Committee began work in September 1996 and the PA Transportation Alliance was established.

PA Transportation Alliance membership is open to every person, organization or group who supports the Mission of the Alliance. Both individuals and organizations can be Alliance members. Each person or organization that joins the Alliance is encouraged to actively work to achieve its mission and goals. Members receive regular mailings about what is happening and how to plug in. There are no membership dues just a commitment to do whatever can be done to improve transportation for people with disabilities.
